Shiatsu is a dynamic hands-on healing therapy that works with the whole person....
Shiatsu is a form of bodywork that uses the power of deep touch, gentle pressure, the breath, stretches and rotations to balance the body's energy system. Shiatsu does this by releasing tension in the muscles, calming the autonomic nervous system and promoting the parasympathetic nervous system which encourages your body's natural healing.
Originating in Japan, Shiatsu means "finger pressure". It allows you to reconnect with yourself and offers time out from the busyness of our lives. Much of the theoretical basis is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine which is why I work with the Meridians (energy pathways) and acupressure points, to treat patterns of imbalance in your body.
The power of Shiatsu lies in the dynamic between the giver and the receiver, the self and other, the witnessing of another individual deeply and accepting them whole-heartedly. This can bring about transformative healing and change on multiple levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It can be a deeply relaxing experience. Shiatsu can also be invigorating and help to enhance vitality and assist people in reaching their potential in life. It can help drop you back into your body and to feel more present, embodied, confident and connected, thus able to more easily negotiate life.
Shiatsu uses Ki(life energy) to bring about change. It enables us to listen to our symptoms with kindness and awareness, helping to release held emotions and past trauma if appropriate. It can assist us in finding inner strength and motivation and can bring about significant change with regard to life paths and decision making.
It can be supportive to a person who is going through difficult times, to help them manage stress, anxiety, sadness or depression and enable someone to find the strength they need in a safe and accepting space. The quality of touch is nurturing and communicates unconditional acceptance.
Shiatsu can also complement conventional medical treatments for more serious health conditions.
After an initial series of sessions to address particular symptoms, many people choose to establish a pattern of regular monthly or bi-monthly treatments as a preventative healthcare programme. You don't need to be ill either. Regular Shiatsu is great for maximising your health and well-being, whatever life brings.
Shiatsu does not replace medical care. It is a holistic complementary therapy and intended to help support the healing process and assist you in taking control of your health condition.
* Shiatsu can also be used as a powerful tool for personal growth *
What to expect from Shiatsu -
The treatment takes place either on a floor based futon, or a massage chair. During the first meeting we will discuss any particular issues you would like addressed, as well as your health condition and lifestyle. This will help to inform the Shiatsu. Treatments can vary and be playful, relaxing and restorative, energising, dynamic and sometimes challenging, depending on what is needed at the time. They can be subtle and powerful and often engender a feeling of deep relaxation.
Shiatsu can help to show people hidden aspects of themselves that can develop greater awareness. We often judge parts of ourselves harshly if aspects are out of kilter or we are in pain. I like to help people to recognise and acknowledge their potential and strengths whilst respecting and nourishing the neglected areas of their being.
What to wear -
It is best to wear clothes that are easy to move in, warm and comfortable. Within reason, the body should be covered as much as possible, so long sleeves and socks are preferable. Skirts, jeans, belts and jewellery are best avoided, as are strong perfumes and make-up.
